Webflow vs WordPress: An Honest Comparison for a Small Business

Pick Webflow if a designer will keep touching the site. Pick WordPress if you want to change it yourself, or hand it to someone who will. Webflow runs $15 to $25 a month plus $100 to $200 an hour for design changes. Ziwi builds WordPress sites for you from $0 with a 12 month plan: website design.

About 1,000 people a month search webflow vs wordpress (our September 2026 keyword pull), and many of them are owners who just sat through a designer's pitch. Most of that pitch is true. What it skips is year two, when you want a new service page and the only person who can build it bills by the hour. Wix and Squarespace are a separate conversation with their own guides.

Who edits your website after launch?

The short answer

On Webflow you can change text and blog entries yourself on a free client seat, but anything structural goes back to a designer at $75 to $200 an hour. On WordPress the same change happens inside a page builder that a large pool of people can drive, so a new section is a task rather than a quote. That one difference decides most of the three year cost.

It got sharper in 2026. Webflow retired the legacy Editor on August 4, 2026 and moved client editing onto seats: a free client seat for content on one assigned site, a limited seat at $15 a month for marketer and content editor roles, and a full seat at $39 a month for Designer access (Webflow legacy Editor deprecation notice and published seat pricing, checked September 2026). Free seats cover typos and posts. They do not cover layout, and layout is what owners want changed.

What does Webflow cost in 2026?

As of September 2026 a Webflow site plan is $15 a month billed yearly on Basic and $25 a month billed yearly on Premium, and the build is the bigger number: roughly $1,500 to $8,000 with a freelancer, $8,000 to $25,000 with a specialist studio. Webflow merged the old CMS and Business plans into one Premium tier in May 2026.

Line itemPublished costWhat it gets you
Basic site plan$15 a month billed yearlyCustom domain, up to 300 static pages, no CMS at all
Premium site plan$25 a month billed yearlyReplaced CMS and Business in May 2026. 20,000 CMS items, 40 collections
Client seat$0Content editing on one site. Replaced the Editor, retired August 4, 2026
Limited seat$15 a monthMarketer and content editor roles, no design access
Full seat$39 a monthDesigner access, so every layout change runs through this seat
The build$1,500 to $25,000Freelance at the low end, specialist studio at the high end
Changes after launch$75 to $200 an hourBilled as used, or rolled into a monthly retainer

Build and hourly figures are from 2026 Webflow agency and freelancer rate surveys, checked September 2026. Two notes on the rest. Basic carries no CMS, so a blog or a locations list puts you on Premium. And the item cap that used to squeeze small sites is gone: 20,000 items is more than a local business will fill. The cost pressure moved from storage to labour.

What is Webflow genuinely good at?

Three things, and they are real. Design freedom without a theme fighting the designer, output that stays clean because no plugin stack is bolting scripts onto every page, and hosting plus CDN inside the $15 to $25 a month so nobody on your side thinks about updates.

  • Design freedom. A designer builds the layout they drew instead of bending a theme toward it. If your brand lives on how the site looks, that counts.
  • Clean output. One system writes the markup and the styles, so you do not inherit four plugins each loading their own scripts and fonts.
  • Nothing to maintain. Hosting, SSL, CDN and platform updates are Webflow's job. No update queue, and no update that breaks a page on a Sunday.
  • A smaller attack surface. No plugin layer means no plugin vulnerabilities, which is a real reduction in the ways a small site gets broken into.

Where does Webflow cost a small business money?

In five places, none of which appear in the $25 a month: hourly design time, the missing plugin layer, what the export leaves behind, the size of the talent pool, and the plan you get moved onto the day you add a blog. Together they are how a $25 a month site becomes a $10,000 three years.

  • Design dependency. A new section, template or layout needs Designer access, so a full seat at $39 a month or a designer at $75 to $200 an hour. Two hours a month at $125 is $9,000 over three years.
  • No plugin ecosystem. The WordPress.org directory lists tens of thousands of free plugins; Webflow's app marketplace is a fraction of that. Booking, memberships, invoicing or a real store means a third-party tool or custom code, and both are billable.
  • The export is static only. Code export gives HTML, CSS, JavaScript and assets. Collection lists come out empty, CMS template pages do not generate, and forms, site search and localization stop working. CMS content exports separately as CSV (Webflow export documentation and 2026 developer guides, checked September 2026). Detail matters here: do you actually own your website.
  • A smaller talent pool. W3Techs put WordPress on about 41 percent of all websites as of July 2026 and Webflow on about 0.8 percent. One of those is far easier to hand to the next person.
  • Basic has no CMS. A blog, a locations list or a staff page built properly puts you on Premium. Ten dollars a month, but worth knowing before the quote lands.

Is Webflow faster than WordPress?

On the averages, yes. In the HTTP Archive Core Web Vitals technology report built from Chrome user data, May 2026 crawl, about 69 percent of Webflow origins passed Core Web Vitals on mobile against about 49 percent of WordPress origins. That is field data from real visits, not a vendor benchmark.

Webflow originsabout 69 percent
WordPress originsabout 49 percent

The gap is mostly hosting.

WordPress's number includes every site on cheap shared hosting with twenty plugins and a heavy theme, because anyone can install WordPress anywhere. On managed hosting with a light theme and disciplined plugins the ceiling is higher than a typical Webflow build, because you control the stack. What decides your own score is image weight, fonts and third-party scripts, on either platform. Ziwi hosting is $99 a month and covers the managed side: WordPress maintenance plans.

Webflow vs WordPress: which should you pick?

Pick Webflow

Pick Webflow if a designer or agency will own the look of the site for the next three years and you are comfortable paying hourly for changes.

Pick WordPress

Pick WordPress if you want edits to be cheap, the talent replaceable and the site portable. The same decision, as a table.

The build is $0 when you keep an ongoing plan for 12 months, $1,000 for a designed template or $2,500 for a custom design, with extra pages at $149 each, one time. Hosting is $99 a month. Ziwi Care is $299 a month per location and covers hosting, a new post every week and unlimited small edits, first month free. Sites go live in 3 days from kickoff.

The terms are the part worth holding next to a Webflow proposal. Month to month with no long contract, every price printed rather than set on a call, and you own the site, the domain, the hosting and the accounts from day one. The one commitment is the free build, where the $0 fee is tied to keeping a plan for 12 months. For how those numbers sit against the wider market, see what a website actually costs.

Webflow is a good product sold to the wrong buyer more often than it should be.

If a designer will be involved every month for years, it is a fair pick. If the honest answer is that nobody will touch the site after launch except you, buy the platform that lets you, and let someone else run it: see website design and landing pages for what the build includes and what happens after launch.
