What Is a Good Cost Per Lead? Benchmarks and Your Own Ceiling

A good cost per lead is one below the ceiling your own numbers set: what a job is worth, times the share you will spend to win it, times your close rate. Published search benchmarks put the all-industry average at $66.69 (LocaliQ, June 2026). Management runs $297 a month. See what Google Ads costs.

About 70 people a month search what is a good cost per lead, and about 10 a month each search google ads cost per lead, meta ads cost per lead and cost per lead benchmarks (our September 2026 pull). Most answers give one number and stop. One number cannot be right for a dentist and a lawyer at the same time, so this page gives the published benchmarks and then the arithmetic for working out your own.

What is a good cost per lead?

The short answer

A good cost per lead is any figure below the most you can afford to pay, and that ceiling comes from your job value and close rate, not from an industry average. As a reference point, LocaliQ's June 2026 search benchmarks put the average across all industries at $66.69 a lead.

In the accounts Ziwi manages, a Google Ads lead typically costs $26 to $33, though it depends heavily on the industry.

$26 to $33a typical Google Ads lead in the accounts Ziwi manages, varies by industry
$297a month for ads management, one fee for Google, Facebook and Instagram, ad spend up to $1,500

What do published benchmarks say by industry?

They range from about $40 to over $130 a lead in search, depending on the trade. LocaliQ's 2026 search advertising benchmarks, by Stephanie Heitman and last updated June 1, 2026, are drawn from its own customers' Google and Microsoft search campaigns.

Industry (LocaliQ, June 2026)Average cost per clickConversion rateAverage cost per lead
All industries$5.428.18%$66.69
Physicians and surgeons$4.7612.43%$40.04
Dentists and dental services$8.0010.67%$72.97
Home and home improvement$8.338.05%$90.92
Real estate$3.223.70%$102.51
Attorneys and legal services$9.875.55%$131.63

Read every benchmark as a marker, not a target.

An average blends large cities with small towns, form fills with phone calls, and well run accounts with neglected ones. Your own figure after 30 days of clean tracking is worth more than any of these rows.

How do you work out your own cost per lead ceiling?

Work backwards from what a customer is worth to you. For example, with $2,000 of profit on a job and 20 percent of it to spend, a customer can cost up to $400, and at a close rate of 1 in 4 the most one lead can cost is $100.

  1. 01

Find the gross profit on an average job. Use lifetime value instead if customers come back, as they do for recurring services.

  2. 02

Pick the share you will spend to win it. This is a business decision, not a benchmark.

  3. 03

Multiply the two. That is your most expensive acceptable customer.

  4. 04

Measure your close rate. Booked jobs divided by leads, over at least a month.

  5. 05

Multiply again. Maximum cost per customer times close rate is your maximum cost per lead.

Here is the arithmetic with round numbers, as an example rather than a client result. Say a job brings in $2,000 of gross profit and you are willing to spend 20 percent of that to win it, so a new customer can cost up to $400. If you close 1 in 4 leads, a lead can cost up to $400 times 0.25, which is $100. At 1 in 2 the same job supports $200 a lead, which is why follow up moves the ceiling more than any bid change.

Close rateMost a customer can costMost a lead can cost
1 in 2$400$200
1 in 4$400$100
1 in 10$400$40

Want your cost per lead measured to the booked job?

Ziwi runs the ads, tracks every call and form to its campaign, and reports cost per booked job. Published prices, month to month, and you own the account.

Why is cost per lead the wrong number to stop at?

Because a cheap lead that never books costs more than an expensive one that does: for example, a $30 lead that closes 1 in 20 costs $600 a customer, and a $100 lead that closes 1 in 4 costs $400. The number that pays the bills is cost per booked job, and you only get it by tracking every call and form back to the campaign that produced it, which Ziwi includes in every plan through call tracking and attribution.

  • Counting spam form fills. A bot submission lowers your cost per lead and your revenue at the same time.
  • Counting every call as a lead. Wrong numbers and sales calls belong in a separate column.
  • Comparing social form leads with search calls. A tap on a prefilled form and a phone call are not the same intent.
  • Buying shared leads and calling them yours. The same homeowner was sold to several companies.

How do you lower cost per lead without buying worse leads?

Fix what happens after the click before you touch the bids, starting with a page for each service you advertise and a reply in seconds, which Ziwi Engage handles for $99 a month. The fastest gains usually come from the landing page and the response time, and how fast to follow up with a lead covers the second.

A lead is only worth what it is likely to book. Weigh it against the job, not the benchmark.
  • Send each ad to a page about that service. Not to the home page.
  • Add negative keywords every week. Jobs, free, DIY and the towns you do not serve.
  • Answer in seconds. Ziwi Engage replies to every inquiry for $99 a month.
  • Run ads when you can answer. Or cover the hours you cannot.
  • Try Local Services Ads if your trade qualifies. You pay per lead, and can dispute ones that do not fit.

What does it cost to have Ziwi manage your ads?

Ziwi charges a flat monthly fee set by your ad spend: $297 with spend up to $1,500, $497 from $1,500 to $3,500 and $797 above $3,500. The spend is paid to the platform from your own account, it is month to month, and you own the account and the data.

A good cost per lead is the one your own numbers can carry, measured to a booked job. If you would rather have someone run that math every month, see Google Ads management, and for the full price picture including ad spend, how much Google Ads costs in 2026.
