Is SEO Worth It for a Small Business?

SEO is worth it when people already search for what you sell in your area and you can wait three to six months for the first movement. It is not worth it if you need booked jobs this month or nobody searches your service. Priced from $297 a month: local SEO services.

About 110 people a month search "is seo worth it for small business" (our September 2026 keyword pull), and the top results are mostly agencies answering yes. The useful version of the answer is arithmetic: what SEO costs, what ads cost, and what each one costs per booked lead once the leads arrive. Below is that math, run on prices Ziwi publishes rather than prices we would quote you on a call.

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

The short answer

It is worth it in two conditions: people in your area already search for what you sell, and you can fund three to six months before the first real movement. If both are true, SEO is usually the cheapest lead source you will ever own, because the pages, reviews and profile keep producing after the month you paid for them.

Ads: known cost, unknown durability

The reason it is worth doing the math yourself is that SEO and advertising fail in opposite directions. Ads have a known cost and an unknown durability: they work this week and stop the day the card declines.

SEO: known durability, unknown ramp

SEO has a known durability and an unknown ramp: the assets last, but nobody can tell you the exact month they start paying. Which risk you can carry is the actual decision.

What does SEO cost compared with ads?

Ziwi's published Local SEO prices start at $297 a month per location with no media cost attached, while ads management starts at $297 a month plus the ad spend you pay Google or Meta directly. That media line is the difference that decides most of this comparison, because it is a real monthly bill that produces nothing the month you stop paying it.

Ads have a known cost; SEO has a known durability. The scale is which risk you can carry.

Every price above is published on Ziwi's pricing page and every plan is month to month. Call tracking and attribution are included in every plan, which matters here: without it you cannot tell which of these lines produced the booked job, and the whole comparison collapses into guessing.

What is the cost per booked lead?

Cost per booked lead is the monthly cash divided by the leads it produced, and at the same lead count SEO comes out cheaper because there is no media bill underneath it. The table below runs that division at four lead counts. The lead counts are illustrative, not a projection: nobody can promise you a lead count, including us.

Booked leads a monthLocal SEO Essentials, $297Local SEO, $597Ads at $297 plus $1,000 spend
5$59 each$119 each$259 each
10$30 each$60 each$130 each
20$15 each$30 each$65 each
40$7 each$15 each$32 each

Read that table with one correction in mind, or it will mislead you. Ads reach their lead count in the first weeks and SEO reaches it in months, so in month one the ads column is producing and the SEO column is not.

The honest framing is that ads win the first quarter on cost per lead and SEO wins the second year, because the SEO column keeps dividing by a larger number without the media bill ever appearing.

There is a second number the table hides. When you stop paying for ads, next month's cost per lead is undefined, because there are no leads. When you stop paying for SEO, the pages, reviews and profile you built stay indexed and keep producing for a while before they decay. That residual is the whole argument for SEO, and it is the reason to insist you own the site, the accounts and the data, which Ziwi puts in writing from day one.

When is SEO not worth it?

SEO is the wrong first purchase in four specific situations, and in three of them advertising is the better answer. The clearest disqualifier is low search demand: if fewer than a few dozen people a month search your service in your area, there is no traffic to win and no amount of optimisation creates it.

  • Nobody searches for it. Check the demand before you buy the service. If the monthly search volume in your city is negligible, put the money into Facebook and Instagram ads, which create demand rather than capture it.
  • You need booked jobs this month. Payroll does not wait three to six months. Run Google Ads to cover the near term and start SEO underneath it once cash flow allows.
  • You cannot fund six months. Three months of SEO then quitting is the worst outcome available: you pay for the whole ramp and leave before the payback.
  • You are about to rebrand, move, or change your business name. Do that first. Changing your name and address mid-program resets the listing consistency work you just paid for.

Does AI search make SEO pointless now?

Not for local businesses, and the data is specific about why. Google's AI Overviews now appear on roughly half of US searches (Google's own 2026 figure, with independent trackers reporting 47 to 60 percent), but local "near me" style searches were tracked at only about 10 percent AI Overview coverage as of December 2025 (BrightEdge tracking). Local intent still resolves to the map pack.

About halfof US searches now show an AI Overview (Google's own 2026 figure)
About 10 percentof local near me searches showed one as of December 2025

The practical translation: informational searches like "how much does a new roof cost" increasingly get answered on the results page without a click, while "roofer near me" still shows three businesses on a map and sends the call to one of them. That is the search your local SEO budget is buying, and it is the one AI has changed least. The mechanics are covered in what local SEO actually is.

How long before SEO pays for itself?

Payback usually lands somewhere between month six and month twelve for a local business, because that is when the ranking positions start being worth real clicks. Position matters enormously: on the industry standard click curve used in Ziwi's own September 2026 SEO plan, position one takes about 27 percent of clicks, position three about 11 percent, and positions six through ten between 2 and 4 percent.

Share of clicks by ranking position
Position oneabout 27 percent
Position threeabout 11 percent
Positions six through ten2 to 4 percent

So arriving on page one is not the finish line. Moving from position eight to position three can roughly triple the clicks from the same search, at no extra media cost, which is why the second half of an SEO program usually returns more than the first half did. The month by month picture is in how long SEO takes.

What is the smallest version worth doing?

The smallest version worth doing is the $297 tier, and if you only ever do three things, do these: verify and fully complete your Google Business Profile, make your business name, address and phone identical everywhere online, and ask every finished customer for a review. Those three cost nothing but attention and they are what the map pack reads first.

  1. 01

Claim and complete the profile. Right primary category, real hours, services listed, photos added. An incomplete profile is the most common reason a business is invisible on the map.

  2. 02

Fix your business details everywhere. One exact spelling of your name, address and phone number, used byte for byte on every listing.

  3. 03

Build a review habit. Ask at the moment the customer is happiest. Steady flow beats a one time burst, and it is the part of local ranking you control outright.

  4. 04

Publish one page per service you actually sell. Not one page listing all of them. Google ranks pages, not intentions.

  5. 05

Then measure. Track calls and forms against the month, or you will never know whether any of it worked.

If you would rather not run that yourself, Ziwi's local SEO and search service starts at $297 a month per location, month to month, with no long contract and every price published. If your near term problem is this month's schedule rather than next year's pipeline, read SEO vs Google Ads before you decide which one to buy first.
