How Long Does SEO Take? An Honest Timeline

Most local businesses see the first real movement in three to six months, and a lead difference worth talking about between six and twelve. Nothing moves in week two. This guide covers what changes each month and why, with no ranking promises. Done for you from $297 a month: local SEO services.

About 170 people a month type "how long does seo take" into Google (our September 2026 keyword pull), and most of them get an answer designed to sell a retainer. This one is not. Below is a month by month picture of what an SEO program is actually doing, what you can see at each stage, what speeds it up, what slows it down, and the point at which it is fair to conclude your provider is not working.

How long does SEO take to work?

The short answer

For a local business, expect the first measurable movement at three to six months and a difference in lead volume you can feel between six and twelve.

The first 30 days produce almost no visible ranking change because the work in that window is technical cleanup, Google Business Profile setup, and page building, none of which Google has crawled and re-scored yet.

That range is not a hedge, it is the shape of the thing.

Search rankings are a queue you join, not a switch you flip.

Google has to crawl the new pages, re-evaluate the profile, weigh the reviews that arrive after you start asking, and then test your listing against businesses that have been in that market for years. Every one of those steps takes weeks, and they run in sequence.

What happens month by month?

Each phase builds the input for the next one, which is why skipping ahead does not work. Here is what is being built in each window and what you can actually observe while it happens.

WindowWhat is being builtWhat you can see
Month 1Technical fixes, Google Business Profile completed and verified, consistent business listings, keyword and competitor map, baseline rankings recordedAlmost nothing in rankings. You should see a written baseline and a fixed profile.
Months 2 to 3Service and location pages published, review requests running, first citations liveLong, specific searches start appearing in Google Search Console. Impressions rise before clicks do.
Months 3 to 6More pages, steady review flow, first earned links, internal linking tightenedMap pack appearances in your immediate area. Positions moving from page three to page one on easier terms.
Months 6 to 9Competitive terms targeted, content refreshed, links compoundingCalls and form fills you can trace to organic. The head terms in your city start to move.
Months 9 to 12Depth: more service pages, more locations, more reviews, more linksCost per lead falling, because the same assets keep producing without new spend.

For a sense of scale, here is the assumption set Ziwi uses in its own SEO plan for ziwimarketing.com, dated September 2026: 20 percent of the easiest target terms in the top 10 by month 3, 45 percent by month 6, 65 percent by month 9, and 75 percent by month 12. That is a planning assumption we argue with internally, not a forecast, and certainly not a promise we would make to you. We publish it because most agencies will not show you the model behind their timeline.

Ziwi's own planning assumption: share of the easiest target terms in the top 10
By month 320 percent
By month 645 percent
By month 965 percent
By month 1275 percent

Why does SEO take months instead of weeks?

Because four slow processes have to complete before a ranking changes, and none of them can be bought. Google must discover and re-index the work, your reviews and listings have to accumulate, other sites have to link to you, and then Google tests your page against incumbents who already have all three.

  1. 01

Crawl and index lag. A new or rewritten page is not scored the day it goes live. Google finds it, queues it, indexes it, and then starts testing it, which routinely takes weeks per page.

  2. 02

Your competitors already started. The three businesses in the map pack in your city have had their profiles, reviews and pages running for years. You are not starting a race, you are catching one.

  3. 03

Reviews and listings accumulate at human speed. You cannot buy 60 reviews in a week without risking the profile. Real review flow is a few a month, compounding.

  4. 04

Links are earned, not switched on. The links that move competitive terms come from real relationships and real assets, and they arrive on someone else's schedule.

What makes SEO faster or slower?

Two businesses on the same plan can be six months apart, and the gap is almost always explained by the five things below. The biggest single accelerator is a Google Business Profile that is already verified and clean, because that is the asset the map pack reads first.

  • How crowded your market is. A plumber in a town of 20,000 and a personal injury firm in Miami are not on the same clock. Population and competitor count set the pace.
  • Whether your Google Business Profile is verified and complete. An unverified or suspended profile stalls everything local. If yours is not appearing at all, start with why your business is not showing on Google Maps.
  • What your site already has. An established domain with real pages moves faster than a three page site launched last month, because part of the work is already done.
  • How many services and locations you need to rank. One service in one city is one problem. Six services across four cities is 24 problems, and they queue.
  • How fast reviews arrive. Review count and recency feed prominence, and prominence is the part of local ranking you have the most direct control over.

Want the timeline run for you?

Ziwi builds the pages, fixes the profile, runs the reviews and reports the movement in plain numbers. Month to month, published prices, you own everything.

Does local SEO move faster than national SEO?

The short answer

Yes, usually, because geography shrinks the field.

Ranking for "emergency plumber" against the whole internet is a multi-year project.

Ranking for "emergency plumber" inside one metro means beating the handful of businesses Google considers plausibly close and plausibly relevant, which is a fight you can win in months rather than years.

That is also why the map pack matters more than the blue links for most local businesses. Three listings sit above the organic results and take a large share of the calls, and they are scored on relevance, distance and prominence rather than on domain authority alone. If the distinction is new to you, start with what local SEO actually is.

What should you expect to see at 90 days?

At 90 days you should expect leading indicators, not a full pipeline. The honest checklist is impressions climbing in Google Search Console, more long specific queries showing up, first map pack appearances close to your address, and a review count that is visibly higher than when you started.

  • Impressions up, clicks lagging. Impressions rise first because Google shows you at position 15 before it shows you at position 5. This is the earliest true signal.
  • More query variety. You start appearing for wording you never targeted. That means Google now understands what you do.
  • Map pack appearances near your address. Proximity means you show up close in before you show up wide.
  • A rising review count. This is the one you control outright, and it is the one that keeps working.

Impressions climb first. Clicks, calls and rankings follow on their own clock.

When should you fire an SEO provider?

Fire them when six months have passed with no movement in impressions and no evidence of work, or at any point if they will not show you the underlying data. Six months is the fair window because that is when a competent program should be visibly moving, and impressions are the fair metric because they move before rankings and revenue do.

  1. 01

Ask for the baseline. If nobody recorded where you started, nobody can prove where you got to.

  2. 02

Ask for Google Search Console access, in your own account. If they will not give it to you, the data is not yours, and that tells you what you need to know.

  3. 03

Check impressions before rankings. Flat impressions after six months is the real red flag. Flat rankings with rising impressions is normal progress.

  4. 04

Ask what shipped. Pages published, reviews earned, listings corrected, links live. Real work leaves a paper trail.

  5. 05

Check whether you can leave. If a 12 month contract is what is keeping you there, that is a contract problem, not an SEO problem.

Ziwi runs SEO month to month with no long contract, and you own the site, the accounts and the data from day one, so a bad month is a decision rather than a trap. Pricing is published: Local SEO Essentials at $297 a month per location, Local SEO at $597, and Local SEO Plus at $997.
