How to Rank Higher on Google Maps

To rank higher on Google Maps, work the three things Google says it scores: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move your address, so the job is a complete, correctly categorised profile, steady reviews, consistent business details, and pages that prove you work in that area. Done for you from $297 a month: local SEO services.

About 260 people a month search "how to rank higher on google maps" (our September 2026 keyword pull). We checked that results page on 3 September 2026 and it is a crowded one: Reddit threads, Google's own support documentation and several large agency blogs. What most of those posts skip is the order of operations, so this guide is sequenced. Do the profile work first, the review work second, and the website work third, because that is the order in which the effort pays.

How do you rank higher on Google Maps?

The short answer

Google says local results are ranked on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches what was searched, distance is how far you are from the searcher, and prominence is how well known your business is, which Google draws from reviews, links and mentions across the web.

Relevance and prominence are the two levers you can move; distance is fixed.

Only two of those are open to you. Distance is fixed unless you move premises, so ranking higher is the work of pushing relevance and prominence far enough that Google prefers you over a closer competitor.

That trade is real and it happens constantly, which is why a business three miles out can beat one on the same block.

What actually decides map pack ranking?

The three factors break down into a short list of things you can act on this week. Below is what each factor means in practice and which specific lever moves it.

FactorWhat it meansWhat moves it
RelevanceDoes your profile clearly say you do this service, herePrimary category, secondary categories, services list, description, attributes, photos, products
DistanceHow far you are from wherever the searcher is standingNot directly controllable. Service area settings and location pages help you compete at range
ProminenceHow well known and well regarded the business isReview count and recency, ratings, links to your site, consistent listings, mentions in local media

Notice what is not on that list: paying Google. Local Services Ads and search ads can put you above the map pack, but they do not change your position inside it, and no one at Google sells map pack placement. Anyone offering to buy you a spot is describing something that does not exist.

How do you make your profile more relevant?

Relevance is the fastest lever because it is entirely inside your dashboard and it can be fixed in an afternoon. The single biggest item is the primary category: it determines which searches your profile is even eligible for, and getting it wrong keeps you out of results you would otherwise win.

  1. 01

Set the primary category to the service you most want calls for. One category, the money one. Add the rest as secondary categories rather than fighting over the primary slot.

  2. 02

Fill in the services list. Every service you actually sell, named the way customers say it, not the way your industry says it.

  3. 03

Write the description for a human. What you do, where you do it, who you do it for. No keyword stuffing, and never put keywords in the business name, which is a guideline breach that risks suspension.

  4. 04

Add real photos, and keep adding them. Your premises, your team, your vehicles, your finished work. Profiles that are visibly maintained perform better than profiles that were finished once.

  5. 05

Set attributes and hours accurately. Accessibility, payment types, appointment links, holiday hours. These feed the filters searchers use.

  6. 06

Post regularly. A short update every week keeps the profile active and gives you a place to put offers and news.

If none of that is possible because the profile does not appear at all, you have a different problem and this is not the guide for it. Start with why your business is not showing on Google Maps, then come back. Setup and ongoing management sit on the Google Business Profile service page.

How much do reviews matter for map ranking?

Reviews are the largest part of prominence that you can influence directly, and unlike distance they compound. Count, rating and recency all read as signals, and a business with 140 reviews spread across three years usually outperforms one that collected 60 in a single month and then stopped.

The operating rule is boring and it works: ask every finished customer, at the moment they are happiest, using a link that goes straight to the review form. Do not offer anything in exchange for a review, because incentivised reviews break both Google's policies and the FTC's rules on endorsements. Do reply to every review, positive and negative, because the reply is the only part of the exchange you control and it is read by the next customer. Handled for you, that is reviews and reputation at $197 a month per location.

We run the profile, the categories, the review flow and the location pages, and report the movement in plain numbers. Published prices, month to month.

Can you rank outside your immediate area?

You can, but not by pretending to be somewhere you are not. The legitimate route is to set your service area accurately in the profile, then build real pages on your website for each town or neighbourhood you genuinely serve, with real detail about the work you do there rather than the same page with the place name swapped.

The illegitimate route is renting a mailbox or listing a virtual office in a suburb you want to rank in. Google's guidelines require a location you actually staff, and profiles built on addresses that do not survive inspection get suspended, which costs you the ranking you already had. If you have no storefront at all, hide the address and run as a service area business, which is the compliant way to cover a wide territory from one base.

Does your website affect your Maps ranking?

Yes, because your site is a large part of how Google verifies relevance and measures prominence. The profile links to it, the business details on it are cross-referenced against the listing, and links pointing to it feed the prominence side of the calculation. A strong profile attached to a thin or broken site is working with one hand.

  • Put the exact business name, address and phone in the footer. Byte for byte the same as the profile. Inconsistency here quietly undermines everything else.
  • Give every service its own page. Google ranks pages. A single page listing eight services ranks for none of them properly.
  • Make the pages load fast on a phone. Most local searches happen on mobile, and a slow page loses the visit before the ranking ever mattered.
  • Make calling and booking obvious. A map place you win and then waste is more expensive than one you never won.
  • Earn a few real local links. A chamber listing, a supplier page, a local news mention. Relevant beats numerous.

How long does it take to move in the map pack?

Profile corrections can show effects in one to two weeks, while review flow and prominence work run on the same three to six month clock as the rest of local search.

Ranges from this section; bar length is the upper end of each range. Nobody can promise a position.

Nobody can promise a position, including us, because the ranking depends on competitors you do not control and on where each searcher happens to be standing.

What you can do is measure it honestly. Record where you rank from several points across your service area at the start, not from your own desk, because results are personalised to the searcher's location and your office view flatters you. Then recheck monthly from the same points. The month by month picture is in how long SEO takes, and the wider context is in what local SEO actually is.

If you want this run rather than read, Ziwi's local SEO and search service is published at $297 a month for Essentials, $597 for Local SEO and $997 for Local SEO Plus, per location, month to month with no long contract, and the profile, the site and the data stay yours.
