Digital Marketing Agency Pricing: What Every Model Really Costs

Digital marketing agencies price four ways: retainer, hourly, project, or a percentage of ad spend. Published 2026 retainers run $1,000 to $20,000 a month (WebFX). The model decides what the fee hides: media, setup, content, and your exit. Ziwi's flat published pricing starts at $297 a month.

About 210 people a month search digital marketing agency pricing (our September 2026 keyword pull), and the top result is usually a Reddit thread rather than an agency, as of September 3, 2026. That is the whole problem in one line. This guide takes each pricing model, states what it costs from dated public sources, and then names what the fee does not cover, because the second part is where budgets break.

What does each pricing model actually cost?

The short answer

A retainer buys an agreed scope for a flat monthly fee, hourly buys time, a project fee buys one build, and percentage of spend buys management priced off your media budget.

The published ranges below come from WebFX's pricing pages, checked September 2026, and Digital Applied's April 2026 breakdown.

ModelPublished rangeWhat the fee does not includeBest fit
Monthly retainer$1,000 to $20,000 a month (WebFX)Ad spend, website build, content beyond the scope line, softwareOngoing work where the scope is written down
Hourly$25 to $250 and up an hour (WebFX); average $150 (Semrush, March 2022)Nothing is capped, so meetings and revisions are billableShort, defined tasks with a ceiling agreed in advance
Project fee$3,000 to $30,000 and up (WebFX); $3,000 to $10,000 for a small business site (Digital Applied, April 2026)Hosting, maintenance, edits and anything after launchA one-time build with a defined finish line

What is not included in the monthly fee?

In most agreements, the media budget is the biggest line and it is not part of the fee. On top of that sit the extras that turn a $1,500 quote into a $3,000 month. Ask about each of these before you sign anything.

  • Ad spend. Paid to Google or Meta, not to the agency. WebFX's PPC page notes most businesses put 20% to 40% of their marketing budget into paid ads, with $1,000 to $3,000 typical in a first month.
  • Onboarding or setup fees. Often one time, often four figures, and often only disclosed in the proposal.
  • The website. A marketing retainer rarely includes the build, and small business sites are quoted at $3,000 to $10,000 by Digital Applied as of April 2026.
  • Software. Call tracking, scheduling, review tools and reporting dashboards are frequently billed through at cost or at a markup.
  • Content. Pages, posts and creative are commonly counted per item once you pass the scope line.
  • The exit. A 12-month minimum, a 60-day notice period, or accounts held in the agency's name are all real costs, paid later.

Why does percentage of ad spend punish growth?

Percentage of ad spend

Because the fee is indexed to your budget, so the agency's revenue grows when your spend grows, even in a month when the phone did not ring more. Digital Applied reports that budgets under $5,000 a month often carry 20% to 25% rather than the standard 10% to 20%, as of April 2026.

Flat fee

The same work billed flat does not move at all.

Monthly ad spendPercentage fee at 15%Ziwi flat feeDifference
$1,000$150$297Percentage is lower, before any minimum fee applies
$2,500$375$497Roughly level
$5,000$750$797Roughly level
$5,000 with a $1,000 minimum fee$1,000$797Flat is lower

That table is honest about the small end: at $1,000 of spend, 15% is cheaper than $297, right up until the published minimum fee of $1,000 a month kicks in (WebFX PPC pricing, checked September 2026). Ziwi charges $297 a month with ad spend up to $1,500, $497 with $1,500 to $3,500 in spend and $797 above $3,500, and never takes a cut of the media.

How do you compare two proposals fairly?

  1. 01

Ask for one monthly number and one media number. If the answer is a range, the scope is not defined yet.

  2. 02

Multiply by 12. Setup fees and minimum terms only look small inside a single month.

  3. 03

Count the deliverables, not the adjectives. Pages per month, campaigns per month, calls answered, reports sent.

  4. 04

Confirm ownership in writing. Website, domain, ad accounts, Google Business Profile, tracking numbers and data.

  5. 05

Check the notice period. Month to month means you can leave in 30 days with your accounts intact.

Pricing models are only confusing while the numbers stay hidden.

Ziwi's are not: every plan, rung and add-on sits on the published pricing page, month to month, with no percentage of ad spend and no account held hostage. For the market-wide ranges, read how much marketing agencies charge, and for the terms to check before you sign, read why most agencies hide their prices.
