How Much Do Marketing Agencies Actually Charge? (2026 Prices)

Most agencies bill one of four ways: a monthly retainer of $1,000 to $20,000, $25 to $250 an hour, a project fee from $3,000, or 10% to 20% of your ad spend. Those are WebFX's published 2026 ranges. Ziwi does it differently, with flat published prices from $297 a month.

This guide is for owners of local service businesses who want a number before they sit through a sales call. Below: the four ways agencies bill, published 2026 ranges from sources you can check yourself, the arithmetic that makes percentage-of-spend fees expensive as you grow, and what Ziwi charges for the same work. Every figure here is either a published price or a dated citation.

What are the four ways marketing agencies charge?

The short answer

Almost every agency bills one of four ways: a monthly retainer, an hourly rate, a fixed project fee, or a percentage of your ad spend.

The model matters more than the headline number, because each one behaves differently when your budget grows, when a month is quiet, or when you want to leave.

ModelHow it is billedPublished 2026 rangeWhat to watch
Monthly retainerA flat fee for an agreed scope, billed every month$1,000 to $20,000 a month (WebFX pricing page, checked September 2026)Scope drifts in both directions. Get the deliverables written into the agreement.
HourlyTime billed against a rate card$25 to $250 and up an hour (WebFX); $50 to $500, average $150 (Semrush, March 2022)You pay for meetings and revisions, so the bill tracks their process, not your results.
Project feeOne fixed price for one defined build$3,000 to $30,000 and up per project (WebFX, checked September 2026)What happens after launch is usually a separate bill.
Percentage of ad spendA share of what you pay Google or Meta10% to 20% of spend, or $1,000 to $3,000 a month (WebFX PPC pricing, checked September 2026)The fee rises when your spend rises, whether or not the booked jobs do.

What does a monthly retainer cost in 2026?

Published retainers start around $1,000 a month and run to $20,000 for a broad scope. WebFX, one of the few large agencies that publishes numbers at all, lists $1,000 to $20,000 a month and prices its own service from $3,000 a month. Digital Applied, in an April 2026 pricing breakdown, puts boutique SEO retainers at $1,500 to $3,000 a month and enterprise work at $7,500 to $15,000.

Two things follow from that table. A four-figure monthly floor is normal among the agencies that publish anything, and most publish nothing, which is why about 110 people a month search how much do marketing agencies charge and about 70 search marketing agency pricing (our September 2026 keyword pull). On both of those searches, a Reddit thread outranks most agency sites as of September 3, 2026.

Why does a percentage of ad spend get expensive?

Because the fee is tied to your budget rather than your booked work. At 15% of spend, a $5,000 monthly budget costs $750 in management fees before a single call comes in, and the agency earns more every time you increase spend. Minimum fees squeeze the other end: WebFX's PPC pricing page pairs the 10% to 20% range with a $1,000 to $3,000 a month figure, which is the real cost of a small account.

Monthly ad spendFee at 15% of spendPublished minimum in the marketZiwi flat management fee
$1,000$150$1,000 a month (WebFX PPC, checked September 2026)$297
$2,500$375$1,000 a month$497
$5,000$750$1,000 to $3,000 a month$797

Ziwi's ads ladder is published with no cap: $297 up to $1,500 in monthly spend, $497 from $1,500 to $3,500, and $797 above $3,500, and the ad spend itself is paid to Google or Meta on top, from your own account, which you keep. The per-channel breakdown sits on the Google Ads management cost page.

Monthly ads management fee: Ziwi's flat ladder next to 15 percent of spend
Ziwi, ad spend up to $1,500$297
Ziwi, ad spend $1,500 to $3,500$497
Ziwi, ad spend above $3,500$797
15 percent of a $5,000 monthly budget$750
Ziwi's ladder is published with no cap: the top rung applies above $3,500 of monthly spend. The ad spend itself is paid to Google or Meta from your own account.

So what does Ziwi charge?

Flat fees, printed, month to month.

Local SEO is $297 a month per location for Essentials, $597 with a new page or post every month and local link outreach, and $997 for competitive markets. Ads management is $297 a month with ad spend up to $1,500, $497 with $1,500 to $3,500 in spend and $797 above $3,500, never a percentage of spend. A website is $0 to build with a plan kept 12 months, or $1,000 for a designed template and $2,500 for a custom design, live in 3 days from kickoff.

  • No percentage of ad spend. Your budget can double without your management fee moving.
  • No long contract. Month to month, with a managed move in and out.
  • You own everything. The site, the domain, the ad accounts, the tracking numbers and the data, from day one.
  • Ad spend stays yours. It goes to Google or Meta from your account, on top of the management fee.

How do you compare two agency quotes fairly?

  1. 01

Separate fees from media. Ask what the fee is and what the ad spend is, as two numbers, for the same month.

  2. 02

Convert every model to a monthly number. An hourly rate with no cap and a percentage of spend both become a monthly figure once you assume a budget.

  3. 03

Get the deliverables in writing. Two $1,500 retainers can differ by an order of magnitude in work delivered.

  4. 04

Ask who owns the accounts. If the agency keeps the website, the ad account or the phone numbers, the exit cost is part of the price.

  5. 05

Ask for the notice period. A 12-month minimum turns a $2,000 monthly test into a $24,000 decision.

The short answer for a local service business in 2026: expect $1,000 a month and up from agencies that publish, more from those that do not, and a percentage of spend that grows with your budget. Ziwi's whole list, every plan and every add-on, is on the published pricing page.
